Who is Kameleon Solar and what makes your products unique?

Kameleon Solar specializes in Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV), offering solar panels that combine aesthetics with high efficiency. Our unique color technologies allow for fully customizable solar solutions that blend seamlessly into any architectural design, without compromising on performance.

As the oldest PV manufacturer in the Netherlands, Kameleon Solar has a long-standing tradition of quality and innovation. All of our PV modules are proudly manufactured in the Netherlands, which is quite unique in the industry and ensures strict control over the entire production process.

As a market leader and color expert in colored PV, we provide a wide range of coloring technologies—not just one—so that we can offer objective advice on which option is most suitable for your project. From ColorBlast to Metalliq and beyond, we ensure that every client receives the ideal solution tailored to their needs. Additionally, we offer comprehensive graphic design services and work preparation, streamlining the entire process from concept to installation.

We also employ specialized translation software for multi-colored panels, ensuring color consistency and avoiding any mismatch, even in complex designs. For architects and builders, our Solar Suite design portal enables you to easily design custom-colored solar panels, while providing real-time insight into the technical consequences of their design choices.

Beyond aesthetics, our commitment to quality means we use only the highest-quality materials, such as glass-glass modules and Maxeon solar cells, ensuring long-lasting performance. Additionally, because we use Maxeon cells, we can guarantee that no forced labor is involved in the manufacturing of our cells or the sourcing of raw materials.

Sustainability is central to our mission, and our products are recyclable, durable, and backed by an expansive certification program, including IEC certificates, EN-norms, LCA, and EPDs.

What types of projects does Kameleon Solar typically work on?

Kameleon Solar is a B2B company, focusing on a wide range of projects, including commercial, industrial, and large residential buildings. Our minimum order size is typically around 100 m², making us a great fit for commercial projects of any size, from small to large.

Our core applications include balustrades, facades, and historical buildings, where our solar panels can be seamlessly integrated into the architectural design. We provide tailored solutions for both renovation and new construction, ensuring that solar energy can be incorporated into any building type without compromising its aesthetic or structural integrity.

What is BIPV (Building-Integrated Photovoltaics) and why should I consider it for my project?

BIPV integrates solar panels directly into the building materials, making them part of the architecture. This means that BIPV replaces traditional building materials, reducing the amount of material used and thereby lowering the CO2 footprint of your building. It offers both aesthetic and functional benefits, generating clean energy while enhancing the building’s design.

For facades, BIPV can free up valuable roof space for other installations. In the case of historical buildings, it allows you to maintain the protected appearance of the structure while making it more sustainable, blending renewable energy generation with preservation.

What is the difference between your various color technologies?

Answer: Each of our color technologies offers distinct benefits:

  • ColorBlast is a coating on the outside of the glass, tempered with the glass for durability. It has a matte appearance with very consistent coloring from any angle.
  • ColorBlast Design utilizes our unique design software to safely translate multi-colored designs to solar panels without risking mismatch, thereby preventing hotspots that could otherwise pose a fire hazard.
  • Metalliq offers high power output and uses an interference filter on the inside of the glass to create a vivid color experience. Available only in single colors, it allows for some color matching while maintaining nearly the same efficiency as traditional panels.
  • Royal Glam and Mystica are color solar cells themselves, instead of using a graphic layer in front of the cells. This design provides high power output, with Mystica offering a subtle matte finish.

How do Kameleon Solar panels compare in efficiency to standard solar panels?

The size of the module and the number of cells it can accommodate often have a more significant impact on a module's efficiency than its color. Because we use Maxeon cells, you can achieve a high power output with the right design. By using our Solar Suite design tool, you can configure your modules to best fit a cell matrix and prevent unwanted power losses.

When it comes to color, each of our color technologies can achieve high power levels, but some offer more vibrant colors than others. In general, very light and vibrant colors tend to cause more power loss than darker colors, as they reflect more light away from the solar cells, reducing the amount of energy captured.

What is the lifespan of Kameleon Solar panels, and what warranties do you offer?

Our glass-glass modules have an expected lifespan of 50 years. Depending on the color technology, cell type, and module type, we can offer up to 30 years power warranty, 25 years product warranty, and 50 years color fastness. We also provide a Mismatch-free Guarantee for multi-colored modules, an essential feature for ensuring the fire safety of colored PV modules.

Using our Solar Suite design tool, you can see the exact warranty conditions for any module you design. You can also reach out to your Kameleon Solar representative to request a datasheet with detailed warranty information.

How do your panels handle extreme weather conditions?

Kameleon Solar panels are designed to withstand a variety of extreme weather conditions, including high winds, heavy snow, hail, and intense UV exposure. Our glass-glass modules are highly durable, with glass on both sides providing superior resistance to physical stressors like wind and sandstorms. These modules also have low degradation rates, maintaining over 85% of their power output after 30 years, making them a great choice for long-term installations in harsh environments.

Our panels also use Maxeon solar cells, which are known for their resilience. The cells' solid metal backing ensures that even if micro-cracks form, the panel continues to function effectively. Maxeon cells are certified to resist hailstones up to 45 mm in diameter, offering excellent impact protection during severe storms.

Additionally, ColorBlast technology uses ceramic inks that are tempered with the glass, making them scratch-resistant, weatherproof, and highly durable. These inks retain their vibrant color for over 50 years, even under constant exposure to harsh environmental conditions, ensuring that your panels remain both functional and aesthetically pleasing over time.
